Sunday 21st October 2018
We awoke late again at about 8.45 a.m. but it was raining quite hard and the visibility was rather low, we could only just see the shoreline buildings. The clouds were low and threatening and there were occasional flashes of lightening and rumbles of thunder.
I made some tea and took it up to the slowly awakening masses and they arose and we had breakfast in leisurely fashion there being no point in rushing as the weather showed no signs of abating during the morning. So, Will and I sat around idly reminiscing about life in Newmarket during our childhood. We were trying to remember names of people and companies in the town. We had especial difficulty locating an ironmongers store called Gilberts and spent some time trying to research old maps of the town. During this we found much information about a bombing attack on the High Street in February 1941 when 10 bombs were dropped on the town.
Meanwhile a very steady rainfall sometimes in increasing torrents kept up outside with few signs of breaking. As the song goes “The rain in Spain.....etc.”
This day was more or less a washout but none the less enjoyable for that as we could rest and take stock before further adventures. Tomorrow, we would go to Gibraltar. As we had food at home there was no real reason to go out although MAC and Paivi did go for a walk later in the afternoon when the rain had abated.

| Nothing whatever to do with Spain!! but these were pictures we dug up on our 'rain day' of the destruction wrought by the bombing of Newmarket in 1941. |
